It is that time of the season when the holiday spirit is in the air. It seems like everyone is so thoughtful, compassionate, generous, and forgiving during this time. I do not know what it is about the holiday season that brings the best out of people. Maybe, it is the holiday music that is being played in every store or the holiday decorations on just about every house for miles and miles. Whatever it is I wish we all would keep the holiday spirit all year around.
It seems as soon as the music stops and the decorations are put away, the qualities that make up the holiday spirit slowly disappear. You know it doesn’t have to be that way. We can keep the holiday spirit all year long. Here are four ways to keep the holiday spirit throughout the year.
Greetings with a smile
Have you ever started your day in a bad mood? Then someone comes along and smiles at you with a pleasant greeting. In just one moment you whole mood has changed and now you are smiling. It is amazing how a simple greeting with a smile can change someone’s one whole day for the better.
Stay in touch
Keeping in touch with your loved ones is not just for the holidays. We have to make an honest effort to keep in contact with our close friends and family. Do not allow the distractions of everyday life prevent you from keeping in touch with them. You may not be able to call or visit as much as you would like but you can send a thinking of you card or a thoughtful letter. You can even send a text message or email just to let them know you are thinking about them.
Sometimes we like to hold grudges when we feel someone has done us wrong. Forgiveness is not always about the other person. Forgiving someone is about you and letting go of the harsh feelings that you have been holding on to. Once you learn to forgive and let go of your anger and hurt feelings, you will see how much better you will start to feel.
Your generosity goes a long way
Donating your time and money should not just be reserved for the holidays. It is so important to stay involved with the needs of our community and the many causes around the world all year long. Donate regularly to charities that are close to your heart. When you take the time to volunteer your time, you are making a difference in many people’s lives.
Do not lose the holiday spirit simply because the holiday season is over. Being thoughtful, generous and forgiving are qualities that we possess should all year long.
