Everything seemed so clear when you first started. You had a clear vision of what you wanted to do. Every class you took, every book you read, and all the late nights you worked would soon start to pay off. One moment you felt like the world was your oyster and nothing could get in your way. At least, that is what you thought. Instead, you are met with one frustrating disappointment after the other. It was as if the world turned against you and maybe your dreams are not meant to be. How do you continue to pursue your dreams when you feel like you are never going to get there?
I would like to say that everything you want in life will come easy but more often than not that is not the case. Many of the successful people we admire today have had the same frustrations you are feeling right now. They continued to push past any disappointments because they believed in their vision of what their life was meant to be. So, don’t think for one moment that you are the only one that feels this way. If you feel like wallowing out of frustration for a few minutes, go ahead; it is okay. After you are done, dust yourself off and try again. Never allow those moments of disappointment and frustration to stop you from getting the things you want out of life. The road to success is not always an easy one.
Before you feel like giving up, just remember to follow these four steps.
1. Make sure you are pursuing your dreams and not someone else’s.
If you are starting to feel as if the passion you once had is no longer there, ask yourself: is this for me or am I pursuing someone else’s dreams? If you are going to be able to get through some of the roadblocks that get in the way of your dreams, you are going to have to be doing it for yourself and no one else.
2. Don’t forget your accomplishments along the way.
Although you haven’t accomplished your primary goal, you have done some really meaningful things along the way. It may seem silly to pat yourself on the back for getting an A on a paper that you thought you would never finish or for closing a deal with a difficult client. These things may seem little, but they can give you that boost of confidence that you need when you are pursuing the ultimate goal that you have set for yourself.
3. Surround yourself with a really good support system.
On those days when you feel like giving up, you are going to need people who will encourage you to keep going. People who will remind you of all the things you have accomplished and of how strong you truly are. They will listen to you when you feel like you are having a mental breakdown, encourage you when you are ready to give up and love you despite it all.
4. Remember why you started in the first place.
The most important thing to do is to remember why you started in the first place. Do you remember how it felt in those moments alone when you were visualizing the day you would be living the life of your dreams? Through all your hard work and disappointments, you finally made it. When you feel like giving up, remember this feeling. Your hard work will pay off. Just stay determined and never stop pursuing your dreams.
Each mistake teaches you something new about yourself. There is no failure, remember, except in no longer trying. It is the courage to continue that counts. ~Chris Bradford
