Throughout our lives, we are going to experience disappointments, whether it is in relationships, career, or everyday life experiences. We must not allow those disappointments to disrupt the growth we want to see in our lives. No matter how many times we feel knocked down, we must always get back up. We should never allow life’s disappointments to cheat us from experiencing all that life has to offer.
Snap Out of It!!
Sometimes it seems like with every disappointment you have the less effort you put towards achieving your goals. You start to accept whatever life gives you, with little or no resistance. Well, you know what, snap out of it! If you want something, you are going to have to fight for it and never give up until you get it. No matter how many times it takes. How many times have you tried to accomplish your goals but somehow things did not work out? 5? 10? Or maybe 30? Did you know J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 different publishers before she could get the book Harry Potter published? Albert Einstein had failed 104 times before he developed the general theory of relativity. He went on to win the Nobel Prize. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before one of his inventions actually worked. Now, that is persistence. He never gave up on his dream to invent things that would change the world. We still enjoy the benefits of those inventions (the light bulb, motion picture, etc.) today.
No More Excuses!
If you feel that you are getting too old to accomplish your goals, the truth is you are never too old to fulfill your dreams. Sorry, you can’t use age as an excuse. Many people gain their success well into their forties. People like Vera Wang, iconic fashion designer, Martha Stewart, an incredible business woman, and Samuel Jackson, famous actor just to name a few. Each one of these people had to face rejection and disappointment in their pursuit of their dream. They did not let it stop them. That type of drive and determination are what you should incorporate into your life when you are pursuing your dreams. You must keep focused on the goals you set for yourselves and stop focusing on your past disappointments. If you think about it, those past disappointments could be life’s way of ensuring that you appreciate what you have when you are finally accomplishing your goals. (A little food for thought.)
Giving up on our dreams can seem easy to do when your friends and family provide you with every reason why you should settle for that life you swore you would never live. In most cases, our family and friends are coming from a loving place. They just don’t want to see you hurt or unhappy when things don’t go your way. We find ourselves working at a job that offers nothing more than a paycheck, staying in a relationship we know we should have left years ago, or hanging on to friendships we have outgrown. Find people who encourage you in the pursuit of your dreams. They will keep you motivated even when you start to doubt yourself.
It is time you shake off your frustrations and try again. Yes, I know you have tried, you may have achieved some of your goals along the way. Maybe those achievements did not bring about the type change in your life or career that you had hoped. Well, it’s time to change your strategy. It is time to step out of that comfortable place you have made for yourself. Now, you must push yourself a little more and believe in your abilities. Yes, it is scary to put yourself out there, but once you start to see your efforts starting to pay off, you will know that it was worth it.
Start doing things that will push you out of your comfort zone. I know it may seem silly at first, but it will inspire those feelings to go after what you want, fearlessly.
Here are a few suggestions:
- If you are afraid of heights, try doing something that will challenge your fear of heights. You may not get to the top right away, but keep trying until you get there.
- Dance to your favorite song at a party even though no one else is dancing.
- Speak to that person who you have been afraid to talk to.
- Apply for that job that you want, even though you feel you are not qualified.
Whatever you choose to do it is meant to revive that passion for life you once had. Hopefully, it will inspire you enough to get out of your comfort zone. Set new goals for yourself or revisit the old ones. Remember disappointments are going to happen. Just make sure that you don’t allow those disappointments to steal the life you were always meant to live. (This is not just your journey; this is a journey that many of us have traveled.)
