Everyone seems to be so busy. The amount of stress that is caused by the constant pressures of school, demands at work, and the never-ending family responsibilities can become overwhelming. Many people are so focused on their everyday demands that they do not take the time for themselves. When you begin to feel stress, do you take time for yourself? How do you relax? When we do not allow ourselves time to relax it can eventually start to take its toll on our mental and physical well-being.
Did you know that over 40% of adults suffer from stress-related health problems? Stress has been associated with illnesses such as anxiety, depression, diabetes, and high blood pressure. This why it is so important to take time to relax. I know it may be hard sometimes to find the time but relaxing is just as important as eating and sleeping. Your body will feel re-energized and better equipped to handle all the responsibilities that you have each day.
To help you get started here are some suggestions on ways to relax:
If you love baking or cooking, you will find that this is a great way to relax. I love to bake. It brings back memories of when I was a little girl baking with my mom. Cooking with someone can help you form a bond that can last a lifetime. Learning new recipes and trying different foods can awaken your creativity. Doing what you love with someone you love will leave you less stressed and feeling more relaxed.
Try gardening to relax after a stressful day. When I was growing up, we had a garden. I loved seeing the seeds eventually turned in to whatever fruit or vegetable we had planted. We had neighbors who would be in the yard for hours trimming and whatever else you would do to rose bushes. I must say they did have beautiful roses. Gardening is a way for you to get creative. Once you get those creative juices going, who have time to be stressed?
Go for a walk
Going for walks is one of my favorite ways to relax. Being out in the fresh air enjoying the beautiful scenery can take your mind any stress you may be experiencing. The calming effects of going for a walk and being out in nature is so powerful that it relaxes the nerves cells in your brain. When your body is relaxed, you are less vulnerable to the effects of stress.
Many people find going to the gym to be a great way to relax. Not me. I exercise, but I just want to get it over with as quickly as possible. For those who do find exercise relaxing, it is a great way to focus on having a healthy mind and body. Exercise triggers the endorphins in your brain relieving your body of stress. Just 20 – 30 minutes of exercising per day can act as an anti-depressant.
Fishing is another one of my favorite ways to relax. Half the time I am so relaxed I could care less if I caught a fish. I have to admit it is pretty cool when I do. The surroundings are made for relaxation the sounds of the water hitting the shore, watching the rippling waves and the soothing sounds of nature. Just thinking about it makes me more relaxed. Just being in nature is own form of stress relief.
Read a book
Another way to rid yourself of stress is to lose yourself in a good book. Curl up with your favorite blanket, warm cup of tea or coffee and that book you have wanted to read. Your stress starts to slip away after every page you turn.
Watching your favorite show
I have been told to stay clear of watching too much TV it will suck you in. I agree. I know because I have been sucked in by a marathon of my favorite shows once or twice. However, in the case of extreme stress, it is allowed. I feel if watching your favorite show at the end of the day allows you to relax, I say do it. Being able to take your mind off the stressful moments of your day will be good for you. So go ahead watch your favorite show but be careful not to over-indulge.
Meditation is another way to relax. For me, meditation it is a work in progress. I feel like every thought I am trying to avoid sneaks into my mind. For others, this is a great way to relieve themselves of stress and find their inner peace. Meditating just for a few moments can do wonders for your mental and physical well-being.
This list just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many ways that you can relax. So, I ask you again. How do you relax?
